Fandango (First 40.7)

Dartmouth Spring Regatta 2001

This year's Dartmouth Spring Regatta was held over the early May Bank Holiday weekend and featured three races over two days. The varied fleet included a pair of X-332s, an X-362, a Mumm 30 and a Melges 24 as well as the IRC 1 and IRC 2 winners from last year's Dartmouth Royal Regatta - the First 40.7 Fandango and the X-302 Blues Xtra.

For this weekend Blues Xtra had added a new Banks Series 2000 1/2oz Runner to her inventory, complementing the Checkmate Kevlar Sport Main and AP No.1 that we supplied last year. Aboard Fandango we were looking forward to the boat's first outing since August last year!

For Saturday afternoon's race a Windward-Leeward course was set in a light and shifty breeze. Confusion reigned at the start as the Committee seemed to be firing guns off almost at random! After a short race of just over an hour for the leaders, first on corrected was the RF 290 Red Fox of Dart followed by the X-332 Xcapade.

For Race 2 on Sunday morning the conditions were very different with a strong breeze and gusts to well over 20 knots. Blues Xtra revelled in the conditions and powered around the track to win by nearly three minutes from the Melges 24 Dignity, with Fandango in third.

On returning to the course area after lunch at the Royal Dart Yacht Club we found the wind had moderated to around 16 knots for Race 3, although there were still some strong gusts to contend with. On board Fandango we opted for full Main together with our PBO Medium/Heavy No.1 and flew around the shortened course to finish in just under an hour, scoring a first on corrected from Blues Xtra.

Congratulations to Peter Johnson and the crew of Blues Xtra for a very well deserved 1st overall. Thanks to David and Tina Scanlan for another enjoyable weekend in the West Country. Aboard Fandango we successfully blew away the cobwebs and still managed a second place overall!
