Welcome to our Exabyte 2 minisite. Keep checking back as we follow Shaun Frohlich and his crew in their 2003 campaign.

Exabyte 2 wins the IRC Championship with Banks Sails

Shaun Frohlich and his Exabyte 2 crew continued their impressive form so far this season by adding the IRC Championship Trophy (see pic, left) to a victory list which already includes winning IRC 1 at the Easter Challenge and the Cervantes Trophy.

After taking delivery of a new Series 2000 AP spinnaker for the weekend together with a new Checkmate Carbon No.2 Genoa and Checkmate Carbon No.3, E2 recovered from a poor 11th position in Race 1 to score 1,2,1,1,1,2,1 for the remaining seven races and won the twenty-strong IRC 1 class by a fourteen-point margin after discard. This scoreline also secured the IRC Championship Trophy for the best performance in any class at the event.

More success for E2

Well done to the E2 crew for a 3rd in IRC 1 in the RORC Myth Of
Malham race. The result leaves E2 leading the series both in Class 1 and
Overall.

Going Offshore This Year? - You need a Jib Top...

After taking delivery of their new Checkmate Kevlar Smoke Jib Top on May 2nd Shaun Frohlich and his Exabyte 2 crew stormed to a Class 1 victory in the RORC Cervantes Trophy Race to Le Havre on May 3rd. E2 was also second overall in IRC 1 behind a J145. This follows on from the boat's recent Class 1 victory at the RORC Easter Challenge.

In his post race debrief Shaun described the sail as "great" and trimmer Tim Mills commented that "a Jib Top is a must, off the breeze we went like a train".

Easter Challenge Success For Exabyte 2

Congratulations to Shaun Frohlich and his Exabyte 2 crew for winning the RORC Red Funnel Easter Challenge at the weekend. Racing in a very competitive IRC 1 class E2 (left) showed great speed across the conditions which varied from 12 to 30+ knots over the course of the six races.

The 19-strong class included E2's sistership Magnum as well as 4 First 40.7s, seven Prima 38s and a pair of J120s. With a scoreline of 3,2,2,1,2,1 in the no-discard event, E2 carried 11 points with the 40.7s Fastwave and Royal Blue Addict on 15 and 18 points in second and third respectively.

Thijs Knapper who was trimming the Banks Checkmate Carbon Mainsail for the weekend commented that "...the sail matched the mast perfectly and enabled progressive depowering through careful use of the backstay..."

IMX 40

During the Autumn of 2002 we were approached by Shaun Frohlich to help improve the performance of his IMX40 Exabyte2. Working alongside key crew from the boat we isolated specific areas where the boat's IRC rating could be improved without sacrificing performance.

Shaun ordered a new Series 2000 VMG spinnaker (shown left) which was used for two races in the Hamble Winter Series scoring a 1st and 2nd which helped E2 score a 2nd overall in IRC1.

The crew were very pleased with the performance of the VMG spinnaker and for 2003 E2 will be gradually introducing more Banks Sails to their inventory beginning with a Checkmate Carbon Mainsail and a Series 2000 .5oz Runner in time for the Warsash Spring Series.

The boat's main focus for the year is the RORC Offshore Series including the Fastnet Race and Banks Sails are looking forward to supporting Shaun and his crew as they aim for the IRC 1 season's title.
