Exabyte 2 (IMX 40)

Warsash Spring Series Race 2
March 23 2003

For the start of Race 2 of the Warsash Spring Series there was a SSE breeze of 18-20 knots blowing. IRC 1 started with a beat to Browndown but with a strong east going tide the leg didn’t take too long.

Aboard Exabyte 2 after a good start we found ourselves bounced to the wrong side of the course to avoid the dirty wind of the bigger boats. This resulted in us rounding the windward mark 100m or so behind the other IMX40 Magnum II and also behind a gaggle of Prima 38s.

The remainder of the course was largely windward leeward legs with plenty of tactical options. We showed good speed to pull back through the fleet, especially downwind with the new Series 2000 1/2oz Runner set. Our new Mainsail was also performing well and this was particularly noticeable later in the race as the wind died down to 13-15 knots.

By the finish we had pulled ahead of the other IMX40 by over three minutes and had also saved out time on all the Primas. The result was a fifth place behind Team Tonic, Desperado, Chernikeeff and WISC.

After two big boat races we are hoping for slightly lighter conditions to give the smaller boats in the class such as ourselves more of a chance!
