Warsash Spring
Series Race 4
April 6 2003
For the fourth race of the Spring Series there was
a force 2-3 northerly breeze blowing. After initially sailing out
to the start area under the VMG spinnaker we went upwind with the
Light/Medium set and back down hill under the Runner as the breeze
built slightly.
Once again the line was slightly biased towards the pin and three
or four boats were called over in the resulting bunch but we had an
excellent start with plenty of space towards the committee boat end.
After a quick tack off, we played the shifts well and ended up in
the leading bunch at the windward mark.
The course was predominantly windward leeward although one very long
reach from Browndown to Prince Consort certainly suited the asymmetric
rigged Max Fun 35 who caught up with the larger leading boats.
At the finish we were still in touch with the 47.7 Kirribilli and
well ahead of the other IMX 40, the Seaquest 36 and all of the Primas.
After a relatively long race it was difficult to judge our position
on corrected time but after guessing at a seventh or eighth we were
very pleased with a fourth. If it wasn't for one very bad beat in
the middle of the race it could, however, have been a lot better!
