Sails Trials,
8 May 2002
Our Chief Sail Designer Hugh Myers joined us aboard Fandango to check
out the existing Mainsail and No.3 prior to producing their replacements
for the Commodores Cup Trials next month. Hugh also took the opportunity
to evaluate our latest 40.7 genoa designs that proven themselves to
be very fast on the racecourse so far this season.
With plenty of sunshine but only around 8 knots of breeze conditions
were far from ideal to look at the No.3 although we still managed
to ascertain that a slightly bigger sail would fit into the fore triangle.
Hugh took plenty of photos of the Mainsail and is currently analysing
these with a view to a slight modification of the luff curve on the
new sail.
The Medium genoa is a very powerful shape and as such we discovered
that very careful attention to sheet tension and car position is needed
to achieve the best from the sail as the wind oscillates between the
bottom of its range at 6 knots true and 10 knots true when the
boat is fully up to hull speed and pointing becomes more of an issue.
All of the crew are looking forward to the Trials which begin with
the Morgan Cup Race to Dieppe on June 7th and then continue with a
weekend of inshore racing over the 15th-16th and culminate with the
IRC Nationals on the 28th-30th.
