Warsash Spring Series 2002: Race 4

Very light airs on the Solent meant a postponement of close to two hours before the start of Race 4 of the Warsash Spring Series. Racing eventually started just before midday and the race team decided to combine starts for the IRC fleets to try and regain some lost time.

Our IRC 2 start was therefore combined with IRC 1 which made for a very busy start line as about 35 large boats jostled for position. Unfortunately for us aboard Fandango the Swan 65 Desperado decided to reach down the line and was very slow in responding to our suggestion that she should head up in response to our pre start luffing. The end result was a poor start in dirty air with nowhere to go.
We managed to claw our way back up the fleet as the wind built to 12 knots true. After rounding the first windward mark in about 10th we managed to get back to 2nd at one stage until we found a hole on the last run and were overtaken by a number of boats. The final result was a 5th on handicap.

This leaves us in fourth position at this stage, with two races to go.
