Howth Autumn League 20.10.2001

For the final race of this year's Howth Autumn League I joined Brendan Murphy aboard his First 31.7, Kocomodo. The 31.7 is a fleet that has really taken off in the Dublin Bay area and entries for the Autumn League were into double figures with around 20 expected to be racing in the Bay next year.

Although the other boats in the fleet all have sails from Irish lofts, Brendan decided to come to us following the excellent results Crewsaver Dickies Yacht Sales had achieved throughout 2001. We delivered Kocomodo's sails a week or so before the series began and Brendan went on to convincingly win the first race turning many heads with his distinctive smoke-coloured Checkmate Kevlar Mainsail.

Before the last race Kocomodo was lying in equal second for the series but four points adrift of first. We knew that to pull back the deficit would be a tall order but all we could do was go for the race win and hope for the best. Prior to the start we spent a few minutes going upwind, flying the Checkmate Kevlar Medium/Heavy No.1 in 10-12 knots true. Just before the allotted start time, however, the wind died and the committee postponed the start.

This gave us a chance to look at the Checkmate Kevlar Sport Light No.1 which had never been out of its bag! The sail looked great and all the crew felt we had excellent speed in the light conditions.

When the race got underway Kocomodo showed good speed all around the course and even after a penalty turn for touching a mark we still managed to finish 10 minutes clear of the next boat on the water after overtaking many of the faster boats that had started before us! This left Kocomodo coming a close second for the series, two points behind the eventual winners.

The superior speed of Banks sails on the First 31.7 was emphasised by Kocomodo winning two of the five races in the series. Brendan and his crew also had the lowest points score overall before the discard came into play, not bad for a boat which had never raced prior to Race 1 in the Autumn League!
