Banks Sails on the Mary Rose!

|
|
The Mary Rose is without doubt one of the best-known ships in British
history and Channel 4 are currently producing a documentary about
the vessel which sank on 19th July 1545. Using a very accurate model,
the production team will be filming a simulation of this sinking.
Another highlight of the 60-minute film entitled "Secrets Of The Dead",
due to be broadcast on 14th August, is the sailing of the model. It
is here that Banks Sails come in.
One week before filming was due to commence we were commissioned by
the production company, Darlow Smithson, to manufacture the sails.
By working alongside the model maker, Allan Thompson, and studying
period pieces such as the Cowdray Engraving (above left), Terry Futcher
and David Irwin (pictured right) produced a full suit for the model
comprising six square sails and four lateen sails.
