Warsash Wayfarer Open Weekend - 27/28 July 2002
Three visiting boats joined five club
boats for the Warsash Wayfarer Open Weekend on July 27th/28th.
Two races were held back to back each day with very light winds
on Saturday and a bit more on Sunday.
Wayfarer technical supremo Tony Cooper crewed by Wayfarer webmaster
Ivan Bedford made the best of the shifts in Race 1 to win followed
by Richard Readings and Pauline Snyder in "Shooting Stars"
with Stewart Reed and Robin Albert in "Finitor" finishing
third. Visitors in 1st, 2nd and 3rd - so much for local knowledge!
Race 2 was another light and shifty affair with the same boats
generally to the fore although this time Phil and Colin Bull
in "Yella" pushed "Shooting Stars" hard
for the second part of the race and finished a close second
with Tony and Ivan in third. After racing Paul Mosley, helm
of "Scarlet & Black", quickly changed from a wetsuit
into his barman's uniform and the crews retired to the clubhouse
for a well deserved drink.
Sunday morning and their were a few sore heads in the fleet
after the excesses of the curry house the night before! Race
officer Richard Jarman set an old-style Olympic triangle/sausage
course with the legs nice and short to wake everybody up. Roger
Cerrato and James Crew in "Bloatmungus 3" finally
found some speed and led the fleet from the first beat to win
by a minute and a half from "Shooting Stars" with
"Yella" in third.
The breeze had picked up slightly for Race 4 which occasionally
had crews sitting out for the first time in the weekend. Bernard
McQuillan and Mike Carreras in "Wysiwyg" were off
the line like a scalded cat and led the fleet for the first
two laps. Unfortunately a spinnaker-handling problem aboard
"Wysiwyg" allowed "Bloatmungus 3" through
to score their second win followed by "Yella" and
"Shooting Stars".
When a discard was applied "Shooting Stars" won the
event with 5 points, followed by "Bloatmungus 3" in
second with 6 points and "Yella" in third with 7 points.
This made it a 1,2,3 for Banks Sails!
