RORC COMMODORE LAUNCHES IRM CHALLENGE

On March 5th RORC Commodore Peter Rutter launched the latest in his long line of yachts called Quokka, a Ker IRM 9m,at the Royal Southern Yacht Club in Hamble. A large crowd watched as wife Svetlana successfully destroyed a bottle of champagne over the bow with her first attempt!
Also launched at the same time were David Aisher's new Yeoman and David Murrin and Stuart Greenfield's new Farr 40, 2XL.
A representative of the RORC's French counterpart, UNCL, was also present to receive the challenge RORC have laid down for the Spi Ouest regatta at Easter. This event is for a team of three IRM boats per country, and closely mimicks the Rolex Commodores Cup which will take place on the Solent in late August.
After winning in IRC aboard their Mills 36 in 1998 and 1999 the crew of the new Quokka hope to make it three in a row in the Warsash Mercantile Credit Spring Series, all powered by Banks Sails.
Quokka's basic initial inventory consists of a Kevlar Medium No.1, Kevlar Blade No.3 and an AP Spinnaker. All the sails are constructed from Contender Sailcloth and the spinnaker is unusual in that it is made from a Silicon coated fabric, to minimise water absorption by the sail aboard what will inevitably be a fairly wet boat when the breeze is up! Following wind tunnel testing at the Wolfson Unit last year the Mainsail features a much larger roach than a standard IRC/IMS configuration. For more details contact Hugh Myers at the loft.

MOONTIGER TAKES RACE 1

With racing cancelled on March 12th for the Blue Group due to a lack of breeze all eyes were on the White Group who had some good racing inshore, out of the strong tide.
Congratulations to Tim Gabriel and the crew of his J105 Moontiger for winning the Bowsprit class in Race 1. Moontiger carries a full suit of Banks Sails including a Checkmate Kevlar Mainsail, Checkmate Pentex Class Jib and Series 2000 Spinnakers.
PRIMO CUP WIN FOR BANKS SAILS

This year's Primo Cup was held over the weekends of 5/6 and 12/13 February from the Yacht Club De Monaco. The event, which is an important early season opener for Europe's one-design keelboats, attracted a high quality fleet of fifteen Beneteau 25s.
British interest centred upon Nigel Biggs and the Checkmate Sailing Team aboard Dickies Yacht Sales. Following a second on the 1999 Circuit they are looking to go one better in 2000! After a close start to the event Dickies began to show their superior boatspeed over the second weekend, scoring two firsts. They actually won the last race by over 5 minutes - not bad in one-design racing!
