Spring Series Sails Talk
Race 2 - March 19th 2000

WINDSPRITE WINS IN LIGHT AIRS

At 9am on Sunday morning it looked as though Race 2 of the Series was going to be sailed in a stiff Northerly breeze. By the first start at 10am however, conditions had changed and the breeze was a very shifty 8 knots and dying!
With a boat not know for its light air performance, David Banks and his OOD 34, Windsprite, managed an excellent win by over seven minutes on handicap in IRC 4.
Windsprite's Banks Sails inventory includes a Crosscut Dacron Mainsail, Checkmate Pentex AP No.1 Genoa and Tri-Radial 3/4oz AP Spinnaker.

FIRST IRM CLASS RACING

The first IRM Class racing showed how well the latest generation of racing boats perform in light airs when compared to their Cruiser/Racer counterparts.
Sharing a start line with IRC1, the two Farr 40s in IRM soon shot off into the distance with Warlord sailing very well in the tricky conditions. Further back the IRM 9m Quokka was pacing much larger IRC 1 boats such as Prima 38s, J120s etc on the water despite the considerable size difference!
With more new boats expected to join the Class as the Series progresses, we can expect some close and exciting racing.

ROARING MEG SCORES 2ND

In a large and very competitive IRC 2 class of over 30 boats, Tim Dixon and Jon Manley's IMX 38, Roaring Meg, scored an excellent second. Not bad for one of the highest rated boats in the class after 30 minutes of kedging. Roaring Meg was flying her brand new Banks Checkmate Kevlar Mainsail - fast straight out of the bag.
